How Embamunaigas improved its project management
Global statistics: fewer than half of all projects are completed within the budget set in advance. Why?
According to the Wellington PPM report for 2018, only 40% of projects are completed on time, 46% of projects are completed within budget and only 36% deliver positive results. Since 2001 this company has been the global leader of scientific thought in project management (PMO — project management office).
Weak project management therefore leads companies to use resources inefficiently, set unrealistic deadlines and generally spend more time completing tasks.
Businesses all over the world are improving the efficiency of project management through process automation and new technical solutions. This market is developing rapidly and showing remarkable figures: according to forecasts by the international research and consulting company IT intelligence firm International Data Corp. (IDC), by 2022 companies’ spending on technologies and services in this area will reach almost $2 trillion.
In Kazakhstan, project management in the corporate sector has serious potential for development. At the beginning of 2019 there were more than 170 certified project managers working in the country. Moreover, Kazakhstan has specialized organizations, for example PMI Kazakhstan Chapter, a public association registered in 2018. It works to promote project management certification.
It is still too early to speak of the universal adoption of project management best practices. Delivered projects in this area, however, already exist on the market. The domestic oil and gas company Embamunaigas, for instance, has completed the automation of its project management processes and monitors every stage of delivery. Together with Prime Source, the company implemented a PMO information system and built a reporting system.

Experts say that, as part of its cooperation with Prime Source, Embamunaigas addressed a set of tasks aimed at improving the efficiency of project management. They include the creation of electronic document management, the archiving of project results in a single system and the management of project delivery timelines. In the participants’ view, this will make it possible in future to minimize the number of projects that overrun their deadlines and budgets. In addition, the oil company has secured a single information environment for everyone involved in the process and created procedures and standards for planning and monitoring project timelines. All of this is tracked in an automated system and, overall, makes it possible to improve the efficiency of project management.
